A few months ago, I was playing a tabletop wargame set during the Punic Wars. I was playing a force from the Greek City State of Syracuse, and realized I had managed to position one of my phalanxes in a near perfect spot. It had a river protecting one flank, a large building shielding the other flank, and the enemy directly in front of them. I remarked to my friends, “That must be one happy phalanx there, with its flanks protected!”

The inspiration for this blog! That is the Happy Phalanx to the left. They became even happier when they realized they were facing light infantry!

For some reason, the phrase “the happy phalanx” stuck in my head. It struck me as either a good title for a kids book about warfare in the ancient world, admittedly a very limited market I would imagine, or a blog. After giving it some consideration, I decided to use it as a title for my blog.

They say you should write about what you know, so I am going to focus this blog largely on my hobbies of miniature painting and tabletop wargaming. I will use it to share my experiences with all aspects of the hobby, as well as providing some basin painting and strategy guides based on those same experiences. I hope that this will help people to better understand this fascinating hobby, or perhaps even inspire people to give them a try themselves.

With this post, my new adventure as a blogger begins. As Julius Caesar said after crossing the Rubicon, “Alea iacta est”, the die is cast. Let’s see how this blog grows over the coming months!
